Best LED Garage Lighting Ideas – Our Top 7 Best Picks

Before we look at our shortlisted options, you may be wondering why we are looking at LED lights instead of other types.

It is true that there are actually two popular lighting options that are suitable for garages, the reason why we are only highlighting LEDs rather than the more traditional fluorescent bulbs is LEDs produce light that is around 3 times brighter, and they also last 3 times longer and less 60% or less energy (learn more about the benefits of LED lighting) without even flickering. If you need help replacing fluorescent to LED tubes, we’ve written an extensive guide on what you should be looking for.

So without further ado though, let’s take a look at our pick of the 7 best LED lights for garages and workshops.

1. Brightech LightPro LED Garage Light with Pull Cord

Bulb Type LED
Lifespan 50,000 Hours
Color Temperature 4,000K
Brightness 4,000 Lumens
Mount Type Suspended Mount
Warranty 3 Years

This LED garage light from Brightech is one of the most affordable on our list and for the very reasonable price it offers a brightness of up to 4,000 lumens over a lifespan of around 50,000 hours. Even if there are periods of time when it is used heavily for long durations, it is still unlikely that you will ever have to replace it.

Thanks to the color temperature of 4,000 Kelvin, this particular LED has a cooler color and as the tubing is frosted and not clear, the quality is a little different to some of the other options listed on this page.

One of the biggest issues that some customers may have with this particular model though is the fact that it comes in a choice of either linkable and non-linkable variations. The non-linkable variation is not nearly as expensive as the linkable version which is so-called because there is an AC Unit included in each individual light to help wire them in. Just bear this in mind when ordering to make sure you purchase the right ones for you.

Another important consideration to make is the fact that Brightech has offered a 3-year warranty on this LED bulb, while it is almost an industry standard for manufacturers to offer 5-year warranties on LEDs. But then again, the price more than makes up for this small details.

Hyperikon HyperSelect LED Garage Lights Review

2. Hyperikon HyperSelect LED Garage Lights – 4 Pack

Bulb Type LED
Lifespan 45,000 Hours
Color Temp 5,000 Kelvin
Brightness 3,800 Lumens
Mount Type Flush or Suspended
Warranty 5 Years

Considering its price, the next on our list, the Hyperikon HyperSelect provides a whole lot of lighting. Every individual light consists of 2 separate LED bulb strips for a combined brightness of up to 3,800 Lumens. These 4′ LED shop lights from Hyperikon were also recently featured in our top 5 best 4 foot shop lights review.

The hanging system utilised by this LED light is what makes it particularly unique, as it does not use the standard chain that many other lights rely on, but a wire suspension instead. Although many customers have suggested that this does make this light easier to install than others, some claimed that they actually had greater difficulty with this model than others.

Whatever way you look at it, the suspension cord offers a lot of room to play with when it comes to making adjustments to the height you want to hang these lights from. Furthermore, the system for mounting the lights helps you to install them flush against the ceiling. One of the major downsides for people looking for this kind of garage lighting set-up, though, is the fact that this particular LED light cannot be installed flush against walls.

It is important also to note that there are 2 potential downsides that may make you look elsewhere. Firstly, and especially important if your garage has particularly high ceilings and you don’t want to mess with your property’s electrical circuit, is the fact that the power cord and on-off switch are in-line with each other, rather than the pull cord hanging down. Meaning if you would run the power cord along the high ceiling or wall, it will be hard to reach, without doing the above.

Another quirk with this kit is the fact that it is available as a 4 pack, but they can’t easily be connected in a series together.

Lepower New Craft LED Flood Light

3. Lepower New Craft LED Flood Light

Bulb Type LED
Lifespan Unspecified
Color Temp 6,500 Kelvin
Brightness 8,000 Lumens
Mount Type Various Options
Warranty 8 Month (60 Days Money Back Guarantee)

This Lepower New Craft LED flood light is an ideal option if you are always on the go, looking for portable LED workshop lights or working outside a lot and don’t necessarily need a regular lighting solution for your garage. Compared to other lights listed on this page, this particular model can be used portably or fixed.

The handle at the back of the light features points for ceiling and wall mounting. Thanks to the built-in stand though, it can be placed on the ground or virtually anywhere. Perhaps one of the best aspects of this light is that it’s completely waterproof.

For the price point and portability, it actually produces a very powerful and bright 8,000 Lumens with a warm colour temperature of 6,500 Kelvin (learn more about LED color temperatures). This makes it closer to natural daylight than many other LEDs. As the reflector on the interior has a scale design, it means the light is spread and glaring is reduced.

  • Waterproofing
  • Portability and a variety of mounting options
  • Bright and warm 8,000 lumens and 6,500 kelvin light

  • Although the mounting options are useful when using the light on the outside, they are a little limited when used inside a garage
  • Needs installed at a considerable distance away from your working area

French May Linkable LED Utility Lights

4. French May Linkable LED Garage Light with Pull Chain

Bulb Type LED
Lifespan 25,000 Hours
Color Temp 5,000 Kelvin
Brightness 4,800 Lumens
Mount Type Flushed or Suspended
Linkable Yes
Warranty 5 Years

French May’s Linkable light provides a bright output of around 4,800 lumens, which is higher than many other models on the market. If you have an especially dark garage, this is a great choice. However, it is crucial that you ensure that the light is mounted high enough to prevent glaring. This additional brightness that it has over other models comes at a cost – it has a lower lifespan of just 25,000 hours, which is in many cases half what other lights offer.

Furthermore, the price per light cost is a lot higher with lights that offer higher lifespans.

All that being said, one of the features that this item has over others is the incredibly easy to use mounting system. It can either hung from suspension chains that are easy to adjust or flush to the ceiling that it consists of a screw system that is simplistic and changed quickly between both options.

You should note though that the quality of the chains could be improved. That’s not to say you shouldn’t buy these lights, just that it might be worth spending the money on a slightly more sturdy chain from a hardware store.

Another feature that customers like is that the AC inputs situated at the end of each individual light make it simple to connect a series of lights together. In fact, you can connect as many tother as you like, almost flush or with a gap of as much as 44 inches between them.

  • Simply and quick mounting system
  • Very bright light of 4,800 Lumens
  • Possible to connect a maximum of 20 lights together

  • Suspension chain is not nearly robust enough
  • Lifespan is lower than other lights at similar price points, at just 25,000 hours

Hykolity LED Hanging Garage Light Fixture

5. Hykolity LED Hanging Light Fixture for Workshops

Bulb Type LED
Lifespan 50,000 Hours
Color Temp 5,000 Kelvin
Brightness 4,800 Lumens
Mount Type Surface or Suspended
Linkable Yes
Warranty 5 Years

Hykolity have produced a great LED light that is capable of more than the average bulb’s brightness of between 3,800 and 4,000 Lumens. With a long lifespan and quite a low cost per light, this is a great and affordable option. Additionally, as the wattage of this bulb is similar to other LEDs that produce less bright light.

Designed to be suspended from the ceiling, this LED features a chain that is quick and simple to install. That being said, if you are looking to mount it onto a wall or flush with your ceiling, you can easily drill some screws into an anchor on the wall through its aluminum fixture.

  • A very long lifespan of 50,000 Hours
  • Reasonable brightness for the price

  • Lights have sometimes been delivered damaged or with damaged packaging
  • To mount it flush to a ceiling or wall it requires additional drilling

LeonLite Linkable LED Garage Light Review

6. LeonLite Linkable LED Utility Shop Light

Bulb Type LED
Lifespan 50,000 Hours
Color Temp 5,000 Kelvin
Brightness 4,000 Lumens
Mount Type Surface or Suspended
Linkable Yes
Warranty 5 Years

Without a doubt, the LeonLite Shop Light is probably the most versatile lights we have come across and is great for larger scale garages that need more than one or two lights. It is not uncommon for lights to obviously be easy to link together, however, the difference with the LeonLite LEDs is that 5 individual lights can be connected end to end using the built-in linkers. If you prefer though, they can be installed with as much as 5 ft separating them with the included power cord.

However, this mounting option involves hard-wiring lights together because the lights do not include an AC plug.

As the mounting system is incredibly flexible, it can be used to hang them from the ceiling but also to install them flush against a wall or even a workstation. This makes it the ideal choice if you are looking for a lighting solution for your workbench or work area. Though, its crucial to note that customers had a lot more difficulty using the mounting system for this light than others and it does not offer the option for flush mounting to your ceiling.

Taking on board all of the features mentioned and the downsides, this is an LED garage & workshop light that is an excellent contender with its brightness of 4,000 Lumens and a long lifespan of 50,000 hours.

  • 4,000 Lumens brightness
  • Can be mounted flush to a wall
  • Up to 5 lights can be connected end to end

  • Mounting system can be trickier than others

Sunco Garage LED Lighting 2 Pack

7. Sunco LED Garage Lighting (2 Pack)

Bulb Type LED
Lifespan 50,000 Hours
Color Temp 5,000 Kelvin
Brightness 4,000 Lumens
Mount Type Surface or Suspended
Linkable Yes
Warranty 5 Years

This LED 2 Pack is difficult to beat, when the quality and price is taken into consideration. An individual light has a length of 50.5 inches and produces 4,000 lumens in brightness. Thus LED workshop lights are well designed and sufficiently powerful for the majority of residential garages . However, if you are on the look out for something that will illuminate a commercial garage or just a large scale garage, it is worth knowing these can be daisy-chained in groups of 4 lights.

We’ve recently finished a standalone Sunco 4 foot shop lighting review as it remains such a strong seller.

Amazingly, these lights do not flicker at all, not even at winter when temperatures are low.

By far the best thing about these particular lights is the fact that they are very easy to install. While many customers did comment that their lightweight feel made them seem cheap, when it came to suspending them from the ceiling, this was forgotten.

The chain hangers included with the lights make it light and easy work to attach them to your ceiling and enable you to adjust the height easily. The plug-in cord that comes with these lights is only 5 ft long, so it is likely that you will need to purchase an extension.

They may have a low price, but as LED garage ceiling lights go, they will definitely last a very long time, and even if they do not last the stated 50,000 hours, they come with a full 5 years guarantee.

  • Energy usage reduction by around 65%

Important Factors To Consider When Choosing Garage lights

Fluorescent vs LED

As we have already mentioned towards at the start, we were only going to be reviewing and highlighting LED lights and not the more traditional fluorescent lights. LEDs have distinct advantages over the alternatives, such as:

  • They don’t include mercury or any other dangerous chemicals
  • They don’t emit UV rays which can be dangerous
  • Safer and more energy efficient to run
  • Can actually save you as much as 60% on your energy usage
  • Longer lifespan than the alternative – 50,000 hours rather than just 15,000 hours

If you want to learn more about Flourescent vs LED lights and the benefits and downsides of both, check out this page.

LED Color Temperature and Brightness

When looking at garage lighting ideas, you’ll notice there are two numbers that appear first in any LED light review or product description are the color temperature and brightness. LEDs can come in various color temperatures, measured in K or Kelvin for short, but the most common temperatures range between 4,000 and 5,000K.

While lower color temperatures produce bluer lights, higher color temperatures produce more orange-tinged light. Want to learn more? Read our full guide to understanding LED color temperatures.

Brightness is measured in Lumens and the most commonly available products produce a brightness of 4,000 Lumens. However, up to 8,000 Lumens and even more.

It should be noted that brighter is not always better, as light that is excessively bright can cause reflections and glaring and even cause long-term health issues. Particularly so if it has been mounted directly above a workstation or hung low from a ceiling. It can take some testing to get the correct brightness, but it could be better to install more lights instead of just one that is too bright.

Connectivity and Installation

Before you choose a lighting system for your garage, you need to give thought to planning how you will set it up. If, for example, you are looking to set lights up above your workstation, it is recommended you think about whether it would be best to have it flush to a wall or hanging from your ceiling.

Additionally, give consideration to the garage height and the adjustability of the hanging systems featured with lights. If you are looking for many lights, do they need to be connected together? if this is the case, ensure that those lights can choose the capabilities and that the number of lights you require can be connected together.

Testing Certification

When you buy LED lights, it is crucial to look for products with either Edison Testing Laboratory (ETL) or Underwriter Laboratory (UL) certification. Both of these certifications notes that it meets the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s minimum electronics safety standards.

Energy Usage and Savings

When you compare them to fluorescent lights, as previously noted LEDs use less considerably less energy while producing the same light, which equates to around 60% or even less.

When looking for the energy usage of 2 lights though, you need to look also at the wattage lights with a higher wattage tend to use energy quicker. The majority of 4,000 Lumens lights have a wattage of 40 watts, but brighter bulbs with a higher lumen count will probably have a higher wattage.

In Summary

To summarise, having sufficient lighting for your garage will obviously make working in it a lot more comfortable and easier.

Although there are a lot of different lights available, we are confident that the 7 we have listed on this page are the best. Along with our buying guide, we feel we have equipped you with all the tools necessary to choose the best LED garage lights for your home.

What kind of lights are in the picture that talks about industrial style pendant lights? I would like to incorporate these into my garage lighting.

David Willis April 3, 2019 at 4:16 am

Hi Christopher,

There’s a bunch of different pendant lighting styles here that might be suitable.

Unfortunately I don’t know the exact brand and model in the picture 🙁 But there are many similar ones at the link above.

Hope that helps,

Christopher Krafcky April 3, 2019 at 1:43 pm

Thank you for your reply. I’ve looked at the link you provided, but can’t seem to determine what would be suitable. I have a 17 x 17 garage, which I’ve walled off 10 x 6 for a small ‘office’. The rest will be used for woodworking. I want to ensure that I have plenty of light without shadows, but not so much that I am blinded. The office can be more of a soft light. Ideas?
