Types Of LED Headlights For Cars – Single Beam or Dual Beam

All cars must have headlights that have dipped beams or low and high beams.

Different setups achieve this in different ways. For instance, some use a single bulb that has been integrated with low and high beam functionality as to not blind other road users. These kinds of headlights are normally referred to as dual-beam bulbs.

Installing new LED headlights

While other headlight designs consist of two individual and separate bulbs with low and high beams. You can learn more about single beam and dual beam led headlights over at the Better Automotive Blog.

While single-beam designs have two bulbs in one headlight, dual-beam designs only have the one. It’s vital that you note that if your car came installed with single beam lights, you can only replace them with a single beam option.

Likewise, if your car originally featured dual-beam headlights, you have to replace them with dual-beam LED bulbs. The two designs are separate and can’t be swapped and changed because the wiring is different for each, which makes modifications impossible.

How to Fit LED Headlights (in a nutshell!)

Fortunately, most LED headlight bulbs have been designed to be user-friendly, particularly when it comes to installing them in place of the originals.

The first step you need to ensure the LED headlights you choose will fit into the make and model of your car.

Although most use standardized fittings, some of the sockets can be different from one model to another.

Removing the Existing Headlight

The first actual step involved in the installation of your headlights is to take off the lens cover and then take the headlight out of its sockets. With most car models, you need to access the headlights by lifting the hood.

Once you’ve accessed the headlight and detached it, you need to then take out the existing lightbulb.

Removing Existing Stock Headlights

Normally, you will find there’s a protector you need to unscrew first, then you are free to unplug the lightbulb.

N.B. – You need to carefully monitor how the original headlight is positioned, so the high beam is facing down and shining upwards and the low beam is facing upwards and shining downwards. You need to put the new bulb in place in the exact same way.

Doing this will ensure you do not restrict the range or width of the beam. You can always check this by looking at it from the front of your car.

Insert the LED Headlight Bulb

If you are sure everything is in the right position, you can then lock the LED headlamp bulbs into place using the screw-on protection. Keep in mind that this will be a little trickier than it normally is when using non-LED bulbs, as there is wiring you must maneuver around too.

Installing the LED Headlight

Be careful and avoid damaging the wiring, while ensuring it is coming out of the sleeve completely.

Attach the Fan the Bulb Base

Once you’ve successfully inserted the LED and the screw-on protection, you need to attach the headlight fan via the plug-and-play kit.

The fan screws onto the back of your LED bulb. Be careful, again, to avoid damaging the wire by screwing over it. Make sure you tighten the fan securely in place as much as possible. Now you need to check the position of the LED.

Although many models easily keep the original position, with others there is some movement when you attach the fan.

Connect the Fan Wire and LED Bulb Wire to the LED Driver

Once you are sure your LED bulbs are correctly positioned, you then need to attach the fan wire and bulb wire to the LED driver. These are easy to tell apart as they look different.

Attach the Connector

Now take the connector and insert this into the correct rocket to finish connecting the headlight to the car’s CPU and the car itself. Before you do anything else next, make sure it works.

If there are any issues with the connection or you missed out something, the CPU will give you an error reading on the display.

If everything is in the right position and working as it should, the headlight should illuminate.

Attach the Headlight Back in its Original Place

Once you have followed all the above steps and it is all working properly, it’s time to insert the headlight back into its socket. You may notice because of the extra driver and cables you have a slightly harder job.

However, most car models have adequate space for everything in the LED headlight bulbs comfortably in place.

Stock vs LED Headlights

How Do LED Headlights Work?

For the uninitiated, LEDs produce light, by controlling the flow of electrical current with a diode acting as a semiconductor. The two main parts of this diode are – the n-type semiconductor and the p-type semiconductor, with a p-n junction between them.

The p-type semiconductor fills with positively charged electrons, while the n-type semiconductor is filled with negatively-charged electrons. When an electrical current is applied to this diode, the negatively-charged electrons are attracted to the p-type conductor.

As electrons are continually moving around an atom’s nucleus the only way they can move away from it, is to change their energy, or lose it. They lose this energy as they cross the p-n junction mentioned above in the form of light or photons.

Want to see them being made? Here’s a cool video on how car headlights are manufactured.

As a result of all of this, the light energy is what illuminates LED bulbs. You can learn more about how LEDs work in our seperate guide.

LED Headlight Bulbs for Cars

LED headlight bulbs are bright enough and provide long enough beams for cars. However, there are a number of specific factors that actually determine whether they are the quality LED headlights for cars.

Getting The Best Headlight Performance

The performance of an LED bulb can be improved greatly in a number of ways by using LED headlights instead of the alternatives. Seeing as the bulbs do not emit as much heat as a by-product of the light they produce, they are far more energy-efficient.

Almost all of the energy generated by LED lights are used to create the light they produce, which is in stark contrast to halogen and HID bulbs where a lot of the energy created transforms into heat.

Low Beam Vs High Beam

As such, less energy and fuel is required to create light with LED headlights than the alternatives. To fully understand how LED lights improve the performance of headlights, we will look at this subject in greater detail below, breaking it down into different aspects of performance.

Ultra-Bright LED Headlights

The brightness of not just headlights for cars, but LED headlight bulbs in general, is measured in Lumens.

While you may find that a headlight bulb is capable of producing a beam of light that is 3,000 lumens or possibly even higher (up to 10,000 lumens in some of the brightest LED headlights), you need to pay close attention to the number of lumens that are used to produce actual light.

Dont dazzle other drivers

Normally, some of the luminosity escapes while energy is produced by the lighting process.

This issue can be counteracted by installing LED projectors into the headlight assembly of your car, as this will help to make a more focused beam of bright light rather than one that is scattered and give you the brightest lights you can get. It also helps prevent you from blinding oncoming traffic.

If you own an offroad jeep and still need more brightness, check out our top 10 best LED light bars for good measure.

Light Color or Color Temperature with LED Lights

The color temperature/color of light produced by these bulbs is measured in Kelvins. Interestingly, the higher the color temperature, the cooler the light color; while on the reverse, the cooler the color temperature, the warmer the light color.

Warm colors are normally produced at around 2,500 to 4,000 K, while cooler colors are produced at between 5,000 to 8,000 K. Read our guide on understanding LED color temperatures if you’d like to learn more.

In general, the best LED headlight kits that illuminate the road better tend to have color temperatures in the lower end of the cool white range, between 5,500 and 6,500 K. Some drivers prefer cooler colors, whilst others prefer warmer headlight bulbs for night driving.

Want to see the difference? Watch this video on Youtube.

Issues with Headlight Color Temperature

As LED bulbs are basically semiconductors, the performance they give more or less depends on the temperature. Diodes are designed to be more productive when the temperature is lower and less so when it is higher.

Therefore it is crucial that LED car headlights temperature is balanced to ensure a consistent amount of light is produced and to keep it running for long periods of time without the chance of them being turned off suddenly.

What does this mean for you? It means you should be keenly aware as to what the heat dissipation of your headlights might be before buying.

Bulb Stability

LED headlight bulbs should be stable enough to not break down or become easily damaged while in use as you are driving. The ballast, also known as the driver, is the component that connects the headlight into the car, that helps to prevent spikes and variations in the voltage-current, while ensuring the headlight operates efficiently and effectively, while providing enough protection against overheating.

They should be shock absorbent to some degree and the degree to which a particular model is shock absorbent and shockproof will depend on the design and materials used to make the bulbs. If not, you can end up with dark spots in your LED headlight bulbs.

If you purchase a low-quality headlight for instance, it may not continue to work after a few bumps.

Bearing in mind that driving is not always a smooth ride, this shows the need to invest wisely in LED headlights and don’t just buy a set because they were the cheapest.

Following on from the shockproof side of stability, it is also vital that you invest in LED lights that have some level of rain/waterproofing. Look for the IP rating of an the headlight and keep in mind, the higher the number, the better protection you will have against rain getting into and onto your headlights.

Other Important Factors to Take Into Consideration

Aside from the above there are some other important factors you need to take into consideration when purchasing LED headlights for your car. Including the legal implications, compatibility with your car and whether there will be issues with your diagnostics system or not.

Are LED Headlights Legal?

If you need your LED headlights to be road legal and comply with all local laws, ensure that the particular model you are buying are designed for operating while you are driving, not those that are only meant for display purposes.

This is why you can’t simply replace the actual bulb and instead have to replace the entire headlight unit.

The road safety laws surrounding this area are a bit beyond the scope of this post so we’ve made a separate article that discusses are LED headlights legal more in-depth.

You need to also lookout for signs that the headlights are properly certified and carry the CE, RoHS, and E-Mark to prove it is compliant with the standards established in the EU (if you are driving there). While here in the US, headlights need to be also compliant and have a DOT-Compliant certification that follows American transport rules and regulations.

The biggest issues arise when you are not just able to illuminate the road but are also blinding oncoming traffic with your headlight bulbs. Make sure you’re considerate of oncoming drivers on the road especially with your full beams.

LED Headlight and Car Compatibility

It’s probably not surprising that this is the biggest concern among drivers when buying a new LED bulb – whether they are going to be compatible with your car or not and circuit interference. Generally speaking, most headlights are made to standard sizes and styles and will, therefore, fit in various cars regardless of their make and model with a simple plug-and-play style kit.

However, this is the part when it is very easy to make very costly and frustrating mistakes, so it still makes perfect common sense to research thoroughly to make sure that whatever headlights you are looking at and interested in purchasing will be compatible with your car or vehicle.

Most car owner manuals include the relevant information pertaining to the headlights or you could look at the model number noted on the current/previous headlight that was installed in your car.

Diagnostics Systems Issues & Error Codes

Sometimes, although not often depending on the car, problems can arise between the diagnostics systems of cars and the headlights. Some LED headlights are just not compatible with vehicles and some vehicles require CANBUS enabled headlights.

This problem seems to occur more in the higher profile manufacturer’s vehicles such as BMW, Audi and Mercedes.

CANBUS Error Codes

However, this issue can be resolved very easily in most situations. If you need to find out how to fix flickering LED headlights, you should be using an anti-flicker or warning canceler, otherwise known as a capacitor and wiring that goes in-between the plug of the bulb and the socket in the car.

Some of the best LED headlight bulbs on the market are those that come with anti-flicker/warning cancelers pre-configured into their design as it can save you a lot of hassle when installing them.

With that said, we hope that you now feel better informed and will find it much easier to choose the right LED headlight conversion kit. One thing’s for sure, if you do make the change, we know you will not be disappointed with the quality of light and the length of use you get out of this technology compared to halogen lights.

Frequently Asked Questions

When buying LED headlight bulbs, most drivers have a few questions before they make a purchase. I’ve tried to answer these common questions as clearly as possible below.

Can I replace halogen bulbs with LED?

Nearly all vehicles that are fitted with halogen headlight bulbs as standard are able to have LED headlight bulbs fitted. LED technology is able to produce much brighter beams than stock halogen headlight bulbs, which are often limited to a maximum of 1000 Lumens.

Can you put LED bulbs in projector headlights?

If you have halogen projectors headlights, in most cases it’s better to fit HID headlight bulbs instead of LEDs. Whilst LED headlights will fit and work on most cars with projectors installed, the projectors often affects the output of the light and the beam pattern.

What is better HID or LED for headlights?

Both HID and LED headlights can output a similar amount of light and beam pattern, however, LED headlights last much longer than HID bulbs. Both technologies are significantly better than halogen bulbs, so you should pick whichever conversion kit is easiest to fit in your model of car.

I prefer 4000 to 5000 K headlights because of the fog in my area. The blue light in high color temperature headlights scatters in fog, and creates glare. Please add a color temperature filter to your search function to make it easier for customers to find the best LED headlight bulbs with the appropriate color temperature.

Hello David or whomever this gets to. I have a 2016 Jeep Patriot which takes the H13 bulbs. I bought a set of LED headlights for my Jeep off of Amazon, for around $40.00 They are actually pretty bright, however, the pattern is all over the place and blinding oncoming drivers. Unfortunately, I am that guy. The brand was the Wenscha T6. Everything started out great for a while. I would turn the headlights on and they would come on solid and not flicker. They were installed July 2019. I now have a flipping light show from Vegas, when I turn them on. They flash on and off, from right to left, and then after being on for a bit they just start to flicker. I want whatever light you can suggest, and whatever adapter or capacitor kit that will keep this nonsense from happening. Please help! Thank You in advance!
