Philips Hue Light Strip Plus Review (Smart Under Cabinet Lighting)

Philips Lightstrip Plus Under Cabinet Lighting Review

When bulbs don’t fit… use strips. No, not bacon strips. LED strip lights.

If you’re wanting to add aesthetically-pleasing lighting to your kitchen but don’t know how, the Philips Hue under cabinet lighting (otherwise known as Philips Hue LightStrip Plus) might just be the perfect fit for your home.

Philips has been manufacturing the best smart light bulbs since the early days of smart capabilities and continues to dazzle millions of homes across the globe with superior lighting.

Lightstrips Plus is one of the many incredible products offered by Philips in their Hue line of smart lighting options. The Philips Hue LightStrips Plus is the one of the best under cabinet lighting option in your kitchen.

It can also be used as some of the best ambient bias lighting money can buy.

It’s simple to install, offers millions of colors, and you can control everything from your phone (and with voice command through a smart speaker).

The Simple, Modern Design of Lightstrip Plus

The Philips Hue LightStrip Plus is exatly what you’d imagine…

A strip of lights.

You can put it under cabinets (and above), around furniture, in your entertainment room, and even more. These strips will make any area in your home (where you have a flat surface) come to life.

The light strip is 80 inches long and 0.6 inches wide, with an adhesive on the back, allowing you to easily attach it to any area in your home. It is easily removable, however, it is recommended that you keep it where you originally place it for maximum life span.

If the strip is too long for the area you want to light up, don’t worry.

You can even cut the strip at pre-set markers to shorten it to your ideal length.Connectable Philips LED Strip Lighting

And… if you are needing a bit more, then you can purchase the 40-inch Extension. It’s simple to connect the extension to the main strip. You can even connect up to 8 total extension strips, allowing you a total of 400 inches (33 feet) for a single strip of lights on one power source.

Of course, if you are wanting more (it’s hard not to once you see how good it looks), you can purchase a new LightStrip Plus base. It just requires that you have a separate outlet to plug it into.

The entire strip (along with any extensions you attach) will work as one light, so whatever color you set the light to will light up the entire strip with that color, simultaneously.

Try not to gasp when you’re given access to over 16 million different colors on your new light strip. For white light, it’s bright enough to light up any room (depending on where it’s placed). The LED lights themselves are 1,600 lumens, offering a very bright light, able to add a classy ambiance to any room.

You can even get an outdoor, weatherproof version to revamp your patio or garden area with the 7-foot model, or 16-foot model.

Smart Lighting Features of Philips Hue

In order to use the smart features with the Philips Hue LightStrip, you’ll have to purchase the Philips Hue Bridge separately. This is the Philips smart hub that connects all the Philips smart lighting together.

How Smart Hubs Work

Once you connect the light strip to the bridge, you’ll be able to really take full control over your light strips (and any other smart lighting you want to connect through the bridge).

You can control the lighting through the Philips Hue app on your smartphone or tablet (from anywhere). Plus, you can even control the lights with your voice.

Connect it to your Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, or Apple HomeKit and command away (which is great when you don’t have your phone with you). If you’re not entirely sure what a bridge is, check out our article on how smart lights work first.

You can still technically use the StripLight without the smart features (and without connecting it to a Philips Hue Bridge) by simply using the white light.

But if you really want to get your money’s worth on it (since it is a bit of an investment), it’s highly recommended to get the bridge as well.

Set the mood with the simple Philips Hue app (or with voice command, or by using a smart light switch). You can change the lights any color you want. Red, Green, Blue, Purple, Orange…

Plus, if you’re just wanting the lights a bit brighter, click a button. Want a warmer light? Not a problem.

Want to have your light strip on when you wake up to grab a cup of coffee in the morning? Set your light strip on a schedule, so they turn on right as you wake up.

And of course, set a night schedule so they turn off automatically (saving you money on your electrical bill).

Going away for the weekend? Scare potential home invaders away by turning your lights on remotely. At the beach?

Just click one button on your phone and your lights will come on at home. It’s a nifty little home security trick that is great for adding that extra peace of mind while you’re on vacation.

One of the coolest features that come with the LightStrip is that you can sync it up to video games, movies, and music to amplify your entertainment experience to a whole new level. Just connect the app Hue Sync and transform every movie, song, or game from now on.

Having a few friends over, and really want to impress them?

Just throw on your favorite playlist and watch their eyes widen when your house transforms into a live concert with the synchronized LightStrip.

The Verdict

Whether you’re wanting to add a stylish ambiance to your kitchen with under cabinet lighting or amp up your entertainment room, the Philips Hue LightStrip Plus is an incredible option.

The simple, stylish LightStrip is easy to install, simple to use and offers an array of features that turn a regular house into a truly transformative smart home.

The one downside is the fact that the LightStrip is on the pricier side, especially considering if you want to get the full smart lighting effect, you’ll have to purchase the Philips Hue Bridge as well.

However, Philips is the number one smart lighting brand with an impressive lineup of smart lighting options.

So, if you are wanting to upgrade your home lighting with the best, user-friendly smart lighting strips available, then choosing the LightStrip would be a solid investment for your home.

Finding resources/articles on inside cabinet lighting would be a great addition. Detailed information for lighting up home cabinet with or without glass doors is almost impossible to find, under cabinet yes, but but inside.

The issues are different enough to warrant a separate discussion.

Critical to this discussion is customizing the strips and connection types. With color lighting you can be facing a daunting task. At each cut section there may be 5+ wires that need to be soldered, or painstakingly treaded into clips, or the holy Grail I have not been able to find, a method to cut a strip, snap on a connector, and plug it in.

Many homeowners would love to learn about to the latter.
